When I woke up this morning and took a shower, even the picture of the orange on the shower gel looked rather appetising…
However, I knew that it was important to wait for that first meal for a couple of reasons:
a) Extending the overnight fast period gives your body a greater chance of beginning autophagy (literally self-eat in Latin). This is essentially your body regenerating – old, damaged cells are gobbled up and once you start eating again, new, healthy cells replace them. Interested? Read more here.
b) If I ate too soon, I would have to wait far too long for dinner, which would not equate to a fun day at work.
Interestingly, we both used a ketone urine test strip today to see if we were in ketosis and indeed we were! This means that our bodies should now be burning fat rather than relying on glucose in our blood for energy (which would come from anything sugary or carbohydrate based). Just two days of cutting carbohydrates out of our diet and this has already been achieved. I showed small signs of ketosis, whilst Ross edged towards moderate. As the female body will typically hold onto fat more easily than the male body, this made sense. The aim is now to stay in ketosis until any weight loss goals are achieved.
We have also been tracking our weight. Whilst this may fluctuate, Ross has lost 3kg so far and I have lost 1.5kg. We are both aware that water intake will also affect this early result.
We had precooked our breakfast/lunch meal the night before, ready to take to work with us in the morning. You may have noticed that we are eating only two meals a day. We both decided that this would be easier to prepare in the first instance and, secondly, we would rather have two substantial meals. Furthermore, eating just two meals a day also prolongs our overnight fast periods and is more conducive to the principle of time restricted eating (an article on this here). If we need something else during the day, we opt for a Miso soup, which totals around 25 calories, but is flavoursome and distracts the taste buds for a while longer.
At around midday, I tucked into a tomato and basil omelette (recipe to be found in the fast 800 book) which was DELICIOUS! This assessment may have been somewhat influenced by my level of hunger. Ross also agreed that this was a wonderful omelette.
Ross had purposely left the middle of the omelettes a little undercooked so that when they were reheated in the microwave, they were just right.
On top of this, I survived off two carrots before getting home for dinner. Our dinner was another the fast 800 book recipe. Ross mentioned that this was the meal he was least looking forward to as it was a stir fry with no noodles. A fairly sad affair, I know, but wow. We were both surprised. Our 'Speedy Chinese Stir Fry' contained ginger, stir fry veg, sweet chilli salmon filet and was seasoned with soy sauce and mirin. The carrot in our chosen stir fry mix really held the flavour of the dish (which was excellent! – super salmony and with a little heat without being spicy). It was more filling than I suspected it would be and we both agreed that this dish would be making a comeback in the near future.
